Serena Williams, a six-time winner of the US Open, was greeted warmly by the crowd as she entered the Arthur Ashe Stadium, featuring prominent celebrities and her daughter Olympia as a special guest.
Olympia recorded the royal entrance of her mother in a sweet black-pink camera on Tuesday, August 30, when Williams entered the hard court to play her first-round match.
Olympia and her mother were also twins because of their matching outfits; Williams wore the same one for her first-round match. The young child was also spotted honouring her mother by decorating her hair with white beads, which were reminiscent of the decorations Williams wore when she won her first championship at the US Open in 1999.
A total of 29,402 spectators came to see Williams’ bravery on the opening night, shattering the US Open attendance record. Williams was returning to the Stadium. Such a large turnout was witnessed for the first time in the tournament’s history during an evening session. With a total of 71,332 attendees, the evening figures added to the opening day session record of 41,930 spectators have established the second-highest single-day attendance mark in US Open history.
Williams announced her retirement intentions earlier this month, and it is quite likely that the current US Open will be her final competition. She hasn’t specifically stated that she’ll retire following it, though.
The supporter’s box, however, was filled with her relatives, a former US President, A-list stars, and professional athletes to watch the “Greatest of All Times.”
