Is Jay Shah, 33, on track to become the BCCI’s (Board of Control for Cricket in India) youngest president? As many as 15 state associations have supported Shah for the BCCI’s top position as of Wednesday, following the Supreme Court’s acceptance of the board’s request to change its constitution to permit Sourav Ganguly (the current president) and Shah (the secretary) to serve one more term.
After the Supreme Court agreed to change the board’s constitution, the BCCI is about to conduct its annual general body meeting and will send letters to state associations for new elections. After the three-year term of the present BCCI office holders expires in September, a new election will be held.
The 15 state organisations that The Indian Express contacted all supported Shah’s bid for the BCCI chairmanship. Many board members believed that Shah’s efforts were the only reason the Indian Premier League was able to continue during the Covid-19 pandemic. The IPL media rights went on to bring in a staggering Rs 48,390 crore, greatly boosting the board’s finances.
A major representative of a state association remarked, “It’s high time Shah takes control of the Indian board, and all associations are ready to support him.
As a result of the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, the new BCCI administration that began operating in October 2019 includes Ganguly and Shah. The BCCI AGM proposed changing its constitution and went to court in December 2019.
