Bengaluru FC defeated Mumbai City FC 2-1 in the thrilling championship game at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday to claim the coveted Durand Cup, adding the final Indian football trophy to their elusive collection. Simon Grayson’s team, who had already won the I-League (in 2014 and 2016), Federation Cup (in 2015 and 2017), Super Cup (2018), and Indian Super League, completed a set with the victory (2019). A video showed West Bengal Governor La. Ganesan Iyer shoving Bengaluru captain Sunil Chhetri away from the trophy for a picture instead of the team’s momentous victory, on the other hand, quickly became popular online.
The incident took place at the trophy-presentation ceremony following the game. La. Ganesan was slightly to Chhetri’s left as the Bengaluru skipper accepted the trophy and requested a photo with the media. The minister was then seen pushing Chhetri toward the centre so he could pose with the trophy for the picture.
In the 10th minute of the game, Sivasakthi Narayanan gave Bengaluru the lead in the final, but Apuia cancelled out the advantage. But Mumbai City’s continued struggles with set-piece defence were exposed when Alan Costa headed in the game-winning goal off a Chhetri corner to give Bengaluru the advantage and ultimately the Cup.
