Even though Rohit Sharma has led Team India to victories in 80% of the T20 International matches he has played in, the T20 World Cup is still a long way off.
Rohit needs to use the T20I series against Australia and South Africa to determine the correct roles and persons before travelling to Australia because India hasn’t yet found their ideal combo. On Tuesday, September 20, the first T20I between India and the Kangaroos will be played at Mohali and should provide obvious clues of the direction India intends to go in the coming month or two.
The Indian captain attended a news conference before the Australia series and answered some important queries.
Third Royal London Series One Day International between England and India
India’s balance has suffered significantly because of Ravindra Jadeja’s absence. The left-hander was being considered by the Men in Blue for use higher in the order, with his bowling and fielding also receiving significant attention for the T20 World Cup.
There were numerous combinations including R Ashwin and Deepak Hooda that were mentioned as possible ways for India to make up for Jadeja. However, India appears prepared to follow a more direct path by substituting Axar Patel in a like-for-like manner.
Rohit Sharma explained the all-rounder conundrum as follows:
Axar has long been on our agenda. Axar is the person who can complete the task for us, we were fairly certain of it. And most recently, if you watched in the West Indies, he played outstanding batting and single-handedly brought home the victory. He also bowls in three phases.
Unlike Jadeja, Axar might not be able to bat at No. 4 or No. 5, but he might be used in some advanced roles against Australia.
In India’s Asia Cup campaign, various powerplays were used. While Rohit continually attempted to set the tone by playing his shots, KL Rahul, who was his opening partner, occasionally made the decision to play too conservatively due to field limits.
In response to the question of whether India will stick with the combative model they have selected, Rohit Sharma said:
“We’ll keep playing that way. That was something we covered in great detail right at the start. Everyone feels perfectly at ease with that. In addition, we are aware of our secondary line of defence. Talking about these topics takes up a lot of our time.
