This was Pakistan’s lone weightlifting medal at the CWG. The lone lifter from the nation to win a gold medal was Shuja-Uddin Malik (85 kg) (Melbourne 2006).
Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, was in a good mood following the performance of weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt, who won the nation’s first gold medal in the current Commonwealth Games.
Sharif tweeted “Well done, Butt saab” in response to a social media post on Nooh’s victory. A Twitter user then quote-tweeted, “Prime Minister sahb.” Well done, say BAAT nahe chalni, butt sahab kay name ka flyover hona chahiye (Mr. Prime Minister, just well done won’t be enough, butt sahab kay name ka flyover hona chahiye).
The Pakistani prime minister responded by saying, “Dam,” which may suggest that a dam rather than a flyover is planned to honour Nooh’s incredible achievement.
Nooh broke the record for the most weight lifted in the 109 kg+ division at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, lifting 405 kg altogether.
This was Pakistan’s lone weightlifting medal at the CWG. The lone lifter from the nation to win a gold medal was Shuja-Uddin Malik (85 kg) (Melbourne 2006). The only other Pakistani on the CWG podium is Judoka Shah Hussain Shah, who earned bronze.
