Mushfiqur Rahim, the wicketkeeper for Bangladesh, confirmed his retirement from T20 international competition on Sunday.
The seasoned cricketer has played for Bangladesh in every World Cup tournament to date, making him one of the game’s current greats. He will not, however, be travelling with the team this year to Australia.
On his official Twitter account, Rahim made the announcement and stated that going forward, he will be concentrating on the Test and ODI versions of the game. The 35-year-old added that he will continue to be eligible to participate in franchise cricket leagues. Rahim expressed excitement about playing for Bangladesh in ODIs and Test matches as he wrapped up his remarks.
“I would like to announce my retirement from T20 INTERNATIONALS and focus on Test and ODI formats of the game. I will be available to play franchise leagues when the opportunity arrives. Looking forward to proudly represent my nation in the two formats-MR15,” said Rahim in his statement.
The choice was made after Bangladesh exited the Asia Cup without having recorded a victory. Only five runs were scored by the 35-year-old wicketkeeper in each game.
Rahim played 102 games for Bangladesh before retiring from the format. In 1500 runs during the course of his T20I career, he has six fifty-plus scores and a top performance of 72 not out.
The 35-year-old wicketkeeper has been having trouble in the game’s shortest format after enjoying a successful year in 2018, as evidenced by his performance in the Asia Cup.
