In their final match of the Super 4 stage on Friday against Sri Lanka, Pakistan faced a five-wicket defeat. Dasun Shanaka encouraged Sri Lanka to bat first, and after Babar Azam’s team collapsed on 121 runs, Sri Lanka was able to complete the chase with three overs remaining thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s sixth half-century. With this victory, Sri Lanka finished first overall in the Super 4 stage after winning all three of their games, followed by Pakistan, both of whom had already qualified for the Sunday final.
Even though the game had a low scoring total and Sri Lanka won rather easily, drama nevertheless occurred in the run chase’s 16th over when the umpire appeared to signal the third umpire for a DRS appeal even though Babar hadn’t asked for one.
Hasan Ali managed to get past Nissanka’s outside edge with the opening delivery of the over, and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan immediately appealed for a caught-behind. However, the umpire steadfastly upheld his call of not out, and captain Babar then proceeded to the pitch to determine whether or not there was an edge.
Babar did not request the DRS, yet the umpire nonetheless went upstairs for a review. Babar could be seen mouthing “Main kaptaan hu (I’m the captain)” to the umpire because he wasn’t happy with the decision.
