England’s 2-1 victory over South Africa in their three-match series significantly increased India’s prospects of making it to the ICC World Test Championship championship match. After winning the opening match of the series against England, the Proteas took the top spot in the standings.
However, the home team came back strongly and defeated South Africa twice with ease. In the second Test, they crushed the Proteas by an innings and 85 runs before crushing them in the final match by nine wickets.
Although England’s chances of making the ICC World Test Championship final the following year are slim, their victory over South Africa will benefit Pakistan, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and Australia.
In terms of the qualification situation for India, the national team is now ranked fourth in the points standings. Six of Rohit Sharma and company’s 12 games in the competition have ended in victories. India now has 75 points after six games, including four losses and two draws. They still have six games left and have accrued 52.08% of the points.
The following series for India will be played away at Bangladesh. It will be a two-match series that follows the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022. Soon after, Australia will play a four-match series against Rohit Sharma and company at home.
The Indian team now controls its own destiny after South Africa’s loss against England. A victory in the WTC awards a team with 12 points. India will therefore have 68.05% of the points if they win their remaining six games without taking any penalties (147 out of 216).
