In place of Rohit, Rahul, and Pant, Shikhar Dhawan will serve as the team’s captain as usual.
KL After undergoing successful surgery to treat a sports hernia and then contracting Covid-19, Rahul has not yet fully healed. The veteran Indian opener addressed the circumstances that have hampered his comeback on social media.
“I wanted to make a few things about my fitness and health clear. I had started my training with the hopes of returning to national service for the tour of the West Indies after my surgery in June, which was successful. Unfortunately, I tested positive for Covid 19 when I was getting back to full fitness,” he tweeted.
He indicated interest in returning to the UAE for the Asia Cup.
This inevitably delays things by a few weeks, but he added, “I intend to heal as rapidly as possible and be available for selection as quickly as I can.
“It is the biggest honour to represent the country, and I cannot wait to return to the field in blue.”
On August 18, 20, and 22, India will play 3 one-day internationals in Zimbabwe. Off-spinner Washington Sundar, who has had an outstanding start to his English county career with Lancashire, has successfully finished his rehabilitation following hamstring and back ailments. Deepak Chahar, a seamer, has also returned to the group.
Since Chahar last played in a match, five months have passed. He also missed the 2022 IPL season. With fewer than three months until the World T20, ODIs aren’t the team’s primary priority, therefore Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya have all been sidelined from the tour.
As usual Shikhar Dhawan will lead the side in Rohit, Rahul and Pant’s absence.
