While experienced all-rounder Shoaib Malik was not a member of the 15-man team, Shaheen Shah Afridi returned to Pakistan’s squad for the eagerly awaited World T20. Malik’s final 124 T20I match was against Bangladesh in November of last year. Due to his importance in middle overs and the fact that the Pakistani team might have gained a lot of experience in the most recent T20 Asia Cup, his omission did not go over well with many supporters. In a tweet, Malik also questioned the team’s selection process “When will we get over culture, friendship, and like and disliking. Allah always supports the upright.”
Mohammad Hafeez, a former captain of Pakistan, criticised the national selection committee for passing over Malik and said that he had recommended the seasoned player to retire following the 2014 World Cup.
Hafeez claimed he was aware Malik wouldn’t be respected because he has experienced the same treatment.
“I’m not even sure if he’ll receive the proper farewell he deserves at this point given his 22 years of international cricket experience.
