Wasim Jaffer, a former cricketer, believes that despite their lacklustre performance against Pakistan, India will not bench their charismatic opener KL Rahul. Following his injury recovery, Rahul has been going through a tough time. He did not do well throughout Zimbabwean visits and was later removed against Pakistan in the Asia Cup game for a golden duck.
Wednesday’s group round match between India and Hong Kong could see some lineup adjustments as players who missed the opening game fill in.
According to Jaffer, the current Indian squad typically supports the players and provides them with ample opportunities to demonstrate their abilities. Jaffer believes that because Rahul is the more experienced player, he won’t be fired after one or two games.
“The way this team operates, we have been seeing it for the past year that the Indian team gives enough opportunities to every player. I personally don’t think we will see any changes. You will back the team you played against the big side. I don’t think one or two failures will make them drop KL Rahul or make any changes unless there’s an injury issue,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.
Due to ailments, Rahul missed playing cricket for the past few months, which was difficult for him. Rahul last participated in a competitive game of cricket in the IPL 2022. Prior to the South Africa T20I series, he injured his right groyne and had surgery for a sports hernia in Germany. He was scheduled to travel back to the West Indies, but COVID-19 infection prevented it.
