MATCH PREVIEW
FC Bayern Munich won its first road game of the season, beating ALBA Berlin 76-77 in overtime, in a landmark game for German basketball. Bayern Munich won back-to-back games for the first time this season, improving to 6-8, thanks to Vladimir Lucic’s 19 points in the second half and overtime, and Greg Monroe’s 17 points and 10 rebounds. Maodo Lo scored 13 points, including two three-pointers in the final 10 seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime, and Danilo Barthel added 10 points in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague’s first-ever meeting between these two German powerhouses.
Since ALBA defeated Brose Bamberg 72-75 on the road during a Top 16 game in March 2013, the replay of the last two German BBL league finals – both won by Bayern – was also the primary all-German EuroLeague game. Makai Mason came off the ALBA bench to score all 17 of his points in the game’s final 18 minutes, while Rokas Giedraitis had 15, Marcus Eriksson had 12, Luke Sikma had 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Landry Nnoko had 5 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks. All of that wasn’t enough, as ALBA fell to 4-10 after losing its third straight game.
Before Giedraitis’ three foul shots, neither team scored in the first two minutes. Until Lo’s three-pointer evened the record, Bayern had not scored in the first three minutes. After Giedraitis added a three-pointer to put ALBA up 8-5, Bayern restricted ALBA to just one basket during a 2-14 stretch in the final four minutes of the period. Joshua Huestis’ main EuroLeague points were part of the surge, as were triples from Huestis and Nihad Dedovic. After ten minutes, Bayern had a 10-19 lead. Dedovic made it 10-21 before Giedraitis put the game out of reach with a three-pointer. The ALBA offence came alive after that, with Sikma scoring 7 points, including a three-pointer, to pull the team within 20-25.
