Ronald Koeman who took charge of Barcelona team 14 months back made a tough start to his second season with the club placed in 9th spot on LaLiga points table.

Barcelona released a statement after Ronald Koeman was sacked stating that the president of the Barcelona club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. The release further stated that Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva. Barcelona thanked the coach for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.

“FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano,” the LaLiga club said in a statement. Barcelona is ninth in LaLiga on 15 points from 10 games, six points behind leaders Real Madrid who beat them 2-1 at the Camp Nou on Sunday. They are third in their Champions League group with three points from three matches after suffering 3-0 defeats in their opening two games against Bayern Munich and Benfica.Barcelona are five-time European champions, and the results marked the first time in the club’s history that they had failed to score in their opening two European games.

Xavi Hernández has accepted an offer from Barcelona to become their head coach after the sacking of Ronald Koeman. The deal is due to be confirmed once agreement is reached to terminate his contract as manager of the Qatari club Al Sadd. Xavi came through Barcelona’s academy and made 767 appearances for the club before finishing his career at Al Sadd. He stepped up to become manager there in May 2019 and would be a popular, unifying appointment at Barcelona even though he lacks top-level coaching experience. He won La Liga eight times and the Champions League four times with the Catalan club as an integral player in the greatest period in their history. He joined the club in 1992, made his debut under Louis van Gaal six years later and departed in 2015 having secured 27 trophies, made 184 assists and scored 85 goals.
