Ronaldo’s hat-trick was the 58th of his career and 10th for Portugal, meaning he has now scored more hat-tricks than any other player in international soccer history. He was previously level with Sweden’s Sven Rydell (1923-1932) on nine hat-tricks. The 36-year-old scored two penalties 13 minutes before Bruno Fernandes (17) and Joao Palhinha (69) further increased the lead to put the result.
Ronaldo has now to his name two iconic records. The most hattricks and the most goals. The 36-year-old took to Instagram to tell his 270 million followers he could now claim the record, having matched Pele’s 767 on March 2. “I’m filled with joy and pride as I acknowledge the goal that puts me on top of the World’s goalscoring list, overcoming Pele’s record, something that I could never have dreamed of while growing up as a child from Madeira,” Ronaldo wrote.
